To boost awareness for Rihanna’s Clara Lionel Foundation (CLF) and their 4th Annual Diamond Ball Gala, Roc Nation and Instagram created a custom “Diamond Ball” AR filter. On September 13, 2018, Rihanna introduced the filter on Instagram, allowing her 60M+ followers to try on a floating glittery crown or make their surroundings sparkle. This interactive filter engaged fans and encouraged donations through a swipe-up link to a Facebook fundraiser. The AR filter, which featured both front-facing and rear-facing camera effects, was the first nonprofit-related AR filter on Instagram. It was designed to include fans in the exclusive event, leveraging Rihanna’s large following and Instagram’s daily engagement. The filter quickly gained millions of impressions and was used by other celebrities, expanding its reach. The campaign successfully raised nearly $30K for CLF in under a week while enhancing awareness and involvement with the Diamond Ball.
